An orphaned baby rhino has bonded with its keeper after seeing South African poachers mutilate his mother for her horn. The animal was brought to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center in South Africa and affectionately named Gretjie by the staff. The poachers slaughtered his mother at the Kapama Private Game Reserve in South Africa on the night of May 7, according to the center.

Could this possibly be the plot for a new Disney film? Anzac, a five-month old kangaroo, found himself alone after his mother was hit by car just north of Melbourne, Australia. Even though Anzac was with his mother when the incident took place, the pouch he was tuckered into kept him safe and sound. When rescuers found the little joey, they figured the young orphan would need a friend to grow up with, so they brought him to the Wildlife Kilmore Rescue Center and introduced him to another lonely orphan, Peggy, a five-month old wombat, whose mother was also killed by a car.

Orphaned Baby Owls Get New Home, Move In With Buddy Jimmy Robinson

After hatching in an incubator at a hawk conservancy in England, two orphaned baby owls have moved in with their new dad, park keeper Jimmy Robinson for a month of hand-rearing at his home, MSNBC's Animal Tracks reports. The burrowing owlets, named Linford and Christie, are 6 weeks old and will require 24-hour care. According to the network, the species gets its names from burrowing in small spaces in the wild.

Two bear cubs that were orphaned after their mother was shot by a Colorado Division of Wildlife officer in August are healthy and receiving care at a wildlife sanctuary on Colorado’s Western Slope, according to a press release from the Animal Law Center. The cubs are expected to return to the wild sometime in 2012.
