One resident was maced by Long Island cops. Another was so brutalized that he needed a prosthetic limb. And then there’s Magnus, who almost lost his life in a religious rite. They’re just a few of the escape-artist animals that found salvation in Woodstock Animal Sanctuary — the premiere destination for New York City critters that flee slaughterhouses and make headlines. Now, the traumatized barnyard bandits are bombarded with affection from the almost-entirely vegan staff of animal lovers.

As Perceptions of Animals Evolve, So Does English
Last month, a steer escaped from a slaughterhouse in the New York City borough of Queens. Video of the animal trotting down a busy street was soon featured on many media outlets. For those who care about animals, the story has a happy ending: The steer was captured and taken to a sanctuary, where he will live out the remainder of his natural life.

Crime Stoppers To Help Stop Abuse of NYC Animals
Help for abused animals in New York City is now just a phone call away. Anyone wishing to report animal abuse in their neighborhoods can simply call Crime Stoppers — and receive a $2,500 reward for the tip, the NYPD and the ASPCA announced Wednesday. "We are giving New Yorkers the means and motivation to stop dangerous criminals and giving animal victims a better chance to survive and recover," ASPCA CEO Matthew Bershadker said as he announced the new initiative at the ASPCA adoption center on E. 92nd St.

Dying Dog Goes on a Bucket List Adventure
When my 160-pound English Mastiff was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, I was crushed. Together Gizelle and I had been through college, boyfriends, our early 20s, and a move from simple Tennessee to big and scary New York City. This dog wasn’t just my best friend — she was my roommate and confidant. What does the vet mean she only has a few months left?

Abused Rescue Dog Treated To The Best Day Ever
Susie had survived unspeakable animal abuse when she was rescued by her new owner Donna, who was also in recovery. Five years and one key piece of legislation later, BarkPost treated the two to a day in New York City in honor of their efforts to combat animal abuse. In 2009, Susie, a young mixed breed dog, was set on fire and left for dead by her abusive previous owner in Greensboro, North Carolina. She suffered third-degree burns on 60% of her body and was left with a broken jaw and missing teeth. Ten days later, she was rescued and taken to Guilford County Animal Shelter, where veterinarians nursed her back to health.

Animal Care and Control Launches Mobile Adoption Center
New York City pet lovers can adopt their next pooch without even visiting a shelter. The city’s Animal Care and Control, with the help of the ASPCA, has
launched their first mobile adoption center which will drive around the
five boroughs to bring their cuddly creatures to a neighborhood near
you. “We’ve long had a need for our own mobile adoption center,” said Risa Weinstock, executive director of Animal Care and Control.

How Was Work? Just Snuggled With Some Kittens
Brace yourselves: Jackson and Eve, 3-month old kittens that are brother and sister, just stopped by the TIME headquarters in New York City. ASPCA reps held
them, and staffers got to pet the gray-and-black-striped cats in front
of blown up posters of past magazine covers. Eve grabbed this reporter’s notepad, for instance. In honor of National Cat Day on
Oct. 29, offices in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle were able to
request kitten and cupcake deliveries in exchange for a $20 donation
that will go to a local shelter, as part of a promotion organized by
Uber, the taxi-hailing app, CHEEZburger, a website for memes, the Seattle Humane Society, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
