Red Pandas Ready For Romance At Denver Zoo



"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" a new red panda named "Chewbacca" came to the Denver Zoo. And he's ready for romance! Chewbacca only has eyes for the zoo's lone female panda, "Daisy," also a red panda. Chewbacca came a long way to meet her, all the way from Detroit, Michigan. Daisy arrived in November from Lansing, Michigan.

Milwaukee Zoo Jaguar Cubs Bring New Genes Into The Endangered Species' Captive Population



Two jaguar cubs are providing more than just cooing fans for Milwaukee's zoo. The spotted brothers are introducing new genes to the endangered species' captive population because unlike most zoo babies, their father was born in the wild. The blue-eyed cubs, born Nov. 13, don't officially have names just yet, but keepers at the Milwaukee County Zoo are calling them "Gaps" and "Dots," due to the markings on their heads.

San Diego Zoo's New Panda To Make Public Debut



A baby panda made its first public appearance to a chorus of "ooos" and "awwws" at the San Diego Zoo. The 5-month-old male cub was brought out to meet its fans for a couple hours Thursday morning. The baby panda is named Xiao Liwu, which means "little gift" in Chinese.

Westminster Dog Show Expands Venue, Adds Two New Breeds



The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is expanding its venue and adding two new breeds, the Russell Terrier and Treeing Walker Coonhound, bringing the number that will vie for the Best in Show to 187. For the first time in its 137-year history, the two-day show on February 11-12 will be held at two venues. In addition to New York's Madison Square Garden, it will be extended to Piers 92/94 on the Hudson River, so dog lovers can get up close and meet their favorite breeds.

Baby Sea Lion Rescued In Malibu On Christmas



A baby sea lion is hopefully on the way to recovery after it was rescued in Malibu on Christmas morning. Experts believe the yearling climbed up on a rock several days ago and got stuck, appearing thin and bony upon discovery. Rescuers said the lion has a medical issue that has yet to be diagnosed. Residents became concerned after they realized the sea lion never left, so they called a local rescue organization for help. They responded Tuesday and successfully rescued the pup with no major injuries.

Jellyfish Cycles Reveal Rise And Fall Of Gelatinous Creature



Though some reports suggest jellyfish are taking over the world’s oceans, long-term records of these gelatinous animals fail to show a global increase in jellyfish blooms likely caused by pollution, warming, coastal development and other human influences. While the analysis of a team of researchers who have pulled together records of jellyfish presence going back to the 19th century don't support a rising gelatinous menace, the team did find a surprise: roughly 20-year cycles in the abundance of jellies.
